This child’s proprioception may be compromised.
Proprioception is the brain’s unconscious sense of where the body is in space.
If the brain receives inaccurate information from the body about its position in space, sleep, attention, coordinated movement, body schema, social interaction, and indeed a basic sense of safety is compromised. When we are aware of where our body is without having to look at it, we can put our attention on the task at hand and therefore do things more efficiently.
We feel ‘grounded’.
Much of the basic foundation of learning is attained through this awareness of body – numbers and basic maths concepts, prepositions and pronouns, and the understanding of boundaries. Without this ‘in the body’ learning, kids need to rely on memorisation for this foundational learning, which often means there is little room for efficient higher level learning.
When this child’s proprioception is enhanced, he will feel more grounded in his body and sleeping academics, and sport will be easier.
Clues that may indicate a compromised sense of proprioception:
- Avoidance of activities that require closing the eyes
- Difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep, or extreme restlessness while sleeping
- Great need for physical contact with another person; clinging
- Need for heavy covers, clothing, or a backpack to feel grounded
- Need to have a light on to seep (fear of the dark)
- Avoidance of team sports
- Attraction to sport/activities that involve physical contact
- Likes roughhousing
What you might see when the sense of proprioception is addressed holistically.
- Improved sleep – easier falling asleep
- More confidence in social situations
- Less clumsy
- Increased coordination
- Less clingy, more secure sense of self
- Understanding prepositions
- More calm
